On behalf of staff and students, I welcome you to the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, University of Delta, Agbor, Delta State, Nigeria. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF FINE AND APPLIED ARTS
The then Bendel State under the Governorship of Professor Ambrose Ali witnessed the introduction of four Colleges of Education. They are; College of Education Ekiadolor, Benin City, College of Education, Iguebe, College of Education, Warri and College of Education, Agbor. Upon the commencement of these Colleges of Educations in 1980, the Department of Fine and Applied Arts was one of the viable Departments in College of Education, Agbor that operated a double major programme domiciled under the School of Vocational and Technical Education that awarded National Certificate in Education (NCE).
In 1985, change which is the only thing that is permanent brought in another government (Military Government) who decided to embark on closure of schools on the excuse that funding them became a challenge. The apprehension that followed the closure of other sister College of Education made the Management of College of Education, Agbor and College of Education, Warri to reach an agreement on subject rationalization as a strategy to sustain the two Colleges of Education. Consequent upon this, in 1988, the Department of Fine and Applied Arts was one of the Departments that paid the price that is, stopped here in College of Education, Agbor, and taken to College of Education, Warri. This agreement of subject rationalization was maintained by the two Colleges of Education until Delta State was created from the defunct Bendel State in 1991. Thereafter, the two Colleges became independent and started reintroducing some of the Departments.
The attempt to re-introduce the Department of Fine and Applied Arts in the College of Education, Agbor failed severally until 25th October 2011 when Mr. Esosuakpo Sunday and Mr. E.O. Egede wrote a letter titled Application for the Reintroduction of Fine and Applied Arts to the then management of the College Dr. Duke Okobia. As a follow-up of the letter, it was formally presented by Mr. Esosuakpo Sunday in the 119th Academic Board Meeting of the College and having explained the imperative nature and the significant roles of Fine and Applied arts in education and national development, the board gave approval for its reintroduction. Based on the approval, it commenced in 2011/2012 academic session with three pioneering academic staff Mr. Esosuakpo Sunday, Mr. E.O. Egede, and Mr. Okonji Andrew. The department became the youngest in the College until the College was upgraded to become University of Delta, Agbor by His Excellency, Dr. Ifeanyi A. Okowa. While in line with the National University Commission, the Department is domiciled under the Faculty of Environmental Sciences now to award Bachelor of Arts (B.A Hons) degree in Fine and Applied Arts.
